The Fundamental Stroke
In Japanese calligraphy, the 横画 (yokoga) is the horizontal stroke — one of the eight basic brush strokes known as eiji happō.
It is more than just a line. The yokoga is considered the most fundamental of all strokes. It forms the character 一 (ichi), meaning "one" — and symbolically represents wholeness, unity, and completion.
In Zen calligraphy, a single horizontal stroke is used to express: "Nothing more is needed."
